Since leaving his own band ATHEIST in 1992 (after nine years and two albums), technical metal drummer Steve Flynn has remained noticeably absent from the music scene. Twelve silent years pass by without no sign, no omen. Then, in December of 2004, Steve Flynn finally decides to break the silence in a big way!
January of 2005 brings Steve Flynn to a local musicians exchange, where he places a brief ad in hopes of finding qualified musicians. Within a few days he receives a response from guitarist Sonny Carson and bassist Stephen Morley who are already working together and actively seeking a drummer. Carson and Morley meet with Steve Flynn for lunch and the three musicians set a date to jam. One very successful jam session begs for another, and then another. After only a few sessions, it is already evident that this is the start of something great!
The three musicians, continuing to jam and already composing material, seek to complete the lineup with equally proficient, top-notch musicians. This music demands a vocalist who can deliver brutally heavy vocal lines while infusing tone and originality. They find this rare combination with singer Kevin Freeman, and he is added to the lineup. Local guitarist Todd Simpson is recruited to share guitar duty with Carson, and the preliminary lineup is now complete.
The name “GNOSTIC” is adopted and it’s time let the secret out -- to Steve Flynn’s oldest friend and co-founder of Atheist, Kelly Shaefer. Shaefer has always remained active in the music industry, working with bands, developing talent, and most notably his 2002 Ozzfest tour with Neurotica. With this extensive experience and the desire to introduce new and exciting acts to the forefront, Kelly Shaefer announces the birth of “Starrfactory Records”.
Shaefer, when presented the first Gnostic material, offers his assistance with representation and production. The band’s hard work and Shaefer’s insight produce the bands first demo “Splinters of Change”; this is the first time in 13 years that the world hears the unmistakable jazzy tech-metal drumming of Steve Flynn.
Even with this excellent demo, Gnostic is not satisfied. This music deserves more intensity, more originality, and leading-edge technicality. In January 2006, Simpson is removed from the lineup, as Gnostic seeks out long-time acquaintance Chris Baker to bring new riffs to the table and weave more intricate guitar lines. The sound of GNOSTIC is now complete with a tighter, thicker sound and a heavier overall mix.
May 2006 sees the release of "Isolate Gravity", a new three-song demo that takes the world by storm and propels the band to the next level. Powered by Starrfactory Records, GNOSTIC is recording the debut album in September/October 2007 in Atlanta, GA.
